My LG AC is not cooling
Start with These Simple Checks
1. Check the Remote Control
It sounds simple, but this is the most common reason for a non-cooling AC. Make sure the remote is set to **Cool mode** (not Fan or Dry) and the temperature is set to a low temperature, typically **below 24°C**.
2. Power Supply & Circuit Breaker
Verify that the AC is plugged in securely and the main circuit breaker for the unit hasn't tripped. Sometimes, an electrical overload can cause the breaker to flip, cutting power to the unit.
3. Is It a Blocked Airflow?
Check for any obstructions around the indoor unit. Curtains, furniture, or clothes can block the airflow, preventing your AC from cooling the room efficiently. Ensure doors and windows are closed to keep the cool air in.
Common Problems You Can Fix Yourself
A Dirty Air Filter
A clogged air filter is the most frequent cause of poor cooling. Over time, dust and dirt accumulate, restricting airflow. This forces the unit to work harder, leading to reduced cooling efficiency and a higher electricity bill.
You can easily solve this by turning off the AC, opening the front panel, and removing the filters. Clean them with a brush or wash them gently with water, then let them dry completely before reinstalling them.
Clogged Coils & Drain Pipe
Dirty Condenser Coils
The coils in your outdoor unit can become covered in dust and debris, preventing them from releasing heat. This causes the AC to fail at cooling the air. A professional can clean these thoroughly.
Blocked Drain Pipe
If you see water leaking from your indoor unit, it’s likely due to a blocked drain pipe. Algae or mold buildup can clog the pipe, causing water to overflow. While you can try to clear it, this is often a job for an expert to prevent further damage.
When a Professional is Your Only Option
Some issues are more serious and require the expertise of a trained technician. Do not attempt to fix these yourself, as it could be dangerous and void your warranty.
Refrigerant (Gas) Leak
Refrigerant is the chemical that cools the air. If there's a leak, your AC will lose its cooling capacity. This is a hazardous job that requires a professional with specialized tools and certification to handle the chemicals safely.
Faulty Compressor
The compressor is the heart of your AC unit. If it fails, your AC won't cool at all. Signs of a faulty compressor include a loud buzzing sound, frequent tripping of the circuit breaker, or the fan running without the compressor kicking in.
Electrical Component Failure
Internal electrical issues, such as a burnt-out capacitor, a faulty thermostat, or a wiring short, can prevent your AC from working. These problems are best handled by an expert to ensure safety and prevent further damage.
